2020: Not the worst year for all businesses

Almost half of Canadian businesses ranked 2020 as an average or better year, compared to previous decade

TORONTO, January 29, 2021

In the latest survey from The Business Monitor, released by Modus Research, Canadian managers and executives were asked “How does 2020 stack up for your organization compared to each of the previous years of the 2010s decade?” Surprisingly, only 55% of executives ranked 2020 as a Worse year, whereas 26% ranked it as Better. In the financial services sector, it is fairly polarized with 45% saying it was worse and 42% better.

This survey was carried out among a representative sample of over 700 Canadian managers and executives at the end of 2020. Unlike other business surveys, the sample is fully random and representative of all Canadian businesses.

The Financial Services industry stands out in its assessment of 2020. By roughly 2 to 1, it rates 2020 better than previous years when compared against other sectors of the economy. That said, Financial Service is polarized between those saying 2020 was better (42%) and worse (45%).
