Support for Canada’s position on Israel-Gaza runs low

The most recent survey from Modalis Public Opinion finds only a minority of Canadians support the federal government siding with Israel on Israel-Gaza.

Key findings in this release:

  • A large number of Canadians have been following the war in Gaza very closely.
  • Whether it is providing military assistance or siding with Israel at the ICJ, the balance of opinion is against supporting Israel.

Canadians are following the situation in Gaza closely.

Fully 40 per cent of Canadians are following the war in Gaza on a daily basis – more closely than any other news item queried.

Overall, more than 7 in 10 are following the situation on a weekly basis or more closely.

Noting that the survey ran shortly after the International Court of Justice provided its preliminary ruling in South Africa’s case against Israel, relatively few have followed this story.

A majority of Canadians oppose Canada providing military assistance to Israel.

More than double the number oppose military assistance to Israel as compared with support.

One-third of Canadians support Canada siding with Israel against South Africa at the International Court of Justice.

While a third of Canadians support Canada siding with Israel at the ICJ, almost half are opposed.

Discussion

Although a solid minority support the federal government providing military assistance to Israel or siding with Israel against South Africa at the ICJ, the balance of opinion is opposed to both. This may help to explain some of the conflicting messages coming from Ottawa on the situation. The war in Gaza is being followed very closely by a large number of Canadians.

Methodology

The survey was conducted from January 27 to February 13 using the Modalis Public Opinion panel – 100% recruited using random probability telephone sampling. Because the panel is built entirely using random probability sampling, it is valid to cite the margin of error for this survey. The survey is based on a representative sample of 1,250 Canadian adults and has a margin of error of +/- 2.8% points, 95 times out of 100. The survey data is weighted by age, gender, household income, and region according to the latest Statistics Canada census.
